Hunt Valley, MD – January 17, 2006
RNT, developer and manufacturer of its patented NanoFoil®, which precisely controls the instantaneous release of heat energy for joining and reaction initiation applications, has been selected as a Nano 50™ award winner by Nanotech Briefs magazine for its role in advancing nanotechnology.

The Awards recognize the top 50 technologies, products and innovators that have significantly impacted – or are expected to impact – the state of the art in nanotechnology. Award sponsor Nanotech Briefs is distributed by ABP International, Inc., which also publishes NASA Tech Briefs, the country’s largest-circulation design engineering magazine widely known for its expertise in recognizing the best technological innovations with real-world applications.

“The winners of the Nano 50 awards are the best of the best – the innovative people and technologies that will continue to move nanotechnology to key mainstream markets,” said Linda L. Bell, publisher of Nanotech Briefs.

Demand for NanoFoil is increasing as a variety of industries have also recognized RNT’s impact in advancing nanotechnology. RNT has therefore been expanding commercial delivery of NanoFoil for reaction initiation and joining applications that current technology cannot effectively or economically address. In addition to bringing on key executives with specialized expertise key to the company’s commercial success, RNT is also building manufacturing facilities and growing distribution channels.

About Nanotech Briefs

Nanotech Briefs is a digital monthly magazine from the publishers of NASA Tech Briefs that highlights engineering breakthroughs in nanotechnology and MEMS. It provides the best of government, industry, and university nanotech innovations offering real-world applications in areas such as electronics, materials, sensors, manufacturing, biomedical, optics/photonics, and aerospace/defense.

The first small-tech publication specifically for engineers designing tomorrow’s nanotech products today, Nanotech Briefs bridges the gap between low-tech nanotechnology news magazines and esoteric research journals providing little focus on commercial applications. Real-world innovations are presented in a concise, easy-to-understand “tech brief” format that highlights the basic technology and its commercial applications. About NanoFoil®

RNT’s patented NanoFoil® is a multilayer foil which enables reaction initiation for propellant ignition, flares and fuses and large/small scale joining of dissimilar materials, making such applications predictable, controllable and far more affordable. When activated by a small pulse of local energy from electrical, optical or thermal sources, the foil delivers localized heat in a fraction of a second.

Key areas served by RNT’s NanoFoil® technology include:
  • Reaction Initiation: For propellant ignition, flares and fuses, NanoFoil provides safety, control and predictability.
  • Joining: Utilizing RNT’s patented NanoBond® process for applications such as armor mounting, structural joining, joining of sputtering targets and bonding of electrical components, NanoFoil provides lower stress, bonding of dissimilar materials and higher electrical/thermal conductivity.

About RNT

Headquartered in Hunt Valley, Maryland, RNT was founded in 2001 by engineering veterans Timothy P. Weihs, Ph.D., who now serves as Chief Technical Officer, and Omar M. Knio, Ph.D., who is RNT’s Senior Vice President. The company develops and manufactures NanoFoil® to precisely control the instantaneous release of heat energy for reaction initiation and joining applications that current technology can not effectively or economically address. RNT has also developed its patented NanoBond® joining process to ensure the benefits of NanoFoil are maximized.

Commercial distribution of NanoFoil® for energetics and joining applications is taking place from RNT’s onsite manufacturing machinery. The company is utilizing its financial backing from a variety of sources – including over $4.5 million in grants from the National Science Foundation – to develop additional manufacturing sites and craft its patented technology for additional applications. RNT has also signed licensing agreements with a number of Fortune 500 Companies. . Its breakthrough technology has earned several prestigious awards including the 2005 “R&D 100” from R&D Magazine, the 2005 Nano 50™ from NASA Nanotech Briefs Magazine and recognition in The National Nanotechnology Initiative Strategic Plan in December 2004.
